How Do I Stay Safe in Wintertime Road Conditions?

A:

A common question of responsible drivers is how to stay safe in the worst of conditions. Usually, it is in the wintertime that roadways can be the most treacherous to drive on. This is a result of colder temperatures that can lead to ice on bridge decks or other parts of the road. If you find yourself wondering how to keep from getting into an Austin car wreck in the winter, the tips below may help.

It is often said that one of the biggest contributors to roadway accidents is driver behavior. This is also true during the winter. As a result, make sure to:

  • Slow down when conditions change
  • Pay attention to roadway warnings and to changing conditions
  • Lightly use your brakes, as slamming on them can lead to loss of control
  • Keep a safe distance between you and the drivers in front of you

Other than improving your driving behavior, another tip is to check your vehicle over. Help prevent an Austin car wreck by making sure to:

  • Inspect your tires and see if they have enough tread on them
  • Check for ice and snow and remove it from your vehicle
  • Get new windshield wipers, if you need them
  • Check your windshield wiper fluid and see if it is topped off

While these tips can help, they certainly do not prevent all wintertime Travis county accidents. If you have been in an accident and need help, make sure to contact Earl Straight at 512.454.1331.
